Brewery Spotlight: Brasserie Blaugies

Brewery Spotlight: Brasserie Blaugies

Posted by Aaron on Apr 4th 2023

The original Blaugies brewery crammed into the garage of the family farmhouse. All production operations took place here from 1988 until 2018/19.

After several years of absence, we are pleased to welcome Brasserie Blaugies back to our shelves!

Tucked just inside the Belgian province of Hainaut along the French border, Blaugies has been producing some of the finest saisons in the world since 1988. Schoolteachers Pierre-Alex and Marie-Noelle Carlier-Portois first started brewing on a tiny setup in their small farmhouse garage, perfecting the recipes that would eventually become their flagship La Moneuse, Darbyste, d'Epeautre, and La Vermontoise saisons.

While their operation has expanded to include their son, Kevin (including his wife and father-in-law), the production of Blaugies beers remained on the tiny garage brewhouse up until 2018/19 when they finally opened a large, state of the art brewery right next door after acquiring land from a gracious neighbor.

I had the remarkable opportunity to visit Blaugies last year. Pierre-Alex, Marie-Noelle, and Kevin were extremely warm, kind and incredibly generous hosts. They showed us the original farmhouse garage brewery and let us wander their bright, shiny new brewhouse which, due to the pandemic, they were very eager to show us since they hadn't been much able to prior to our visit.

After the tour we congregated to the center of the brewery were Pierre-Alex, standing from a forklift bearing a pallet full of various bottles of their beer exclaimed, "Now we drink!" For the next few hours we popped bottles freely, shared stories, and sipped away the late morning under the bright lights of one of the most formidable saison breweries in the world. We were then treated to a delicious multiple-course lunch at their adjacent restaurant, Le Fourquet, with...of course, more delicious Blaugies beer.

Darbyste Saison
$13.99 | 750ml

Wheat-based saison fermented with a touch of fig juice. Similar to a Belgian “Wit” or “Blanche” style, but a little drier and a lot more substantial and flavorful. The fig note is subtle lending a touch of fruit without being sweet.

La Vermontoise Saison
$13.99 | 750ml

A spelt saison brewed with Amarillo hops. Brewed in collaboration with Hill Farmstead. The Hill Farmstead brewers traveled to Brasserie de Blaugies to share in the kindred bond of farmhouse brewing. The result is this classic saison brewed with spelt and an abundance of Amarillo hops. A true expression of noble Belgian tradition and artistic American innovation from the families at Brasseries de Blaugies and Hill Farmstead.

Saison d'Epeautre
$10.99 | 375ml

Saison made with spelt and barley. Very dry and light in body, with a hint of wheaty tartness and a hardy texture that expresses the character of spelt, a primitive strain of wheat.

The new brewery located on property just behind the house. The land originally belonged to a neighbor who graciously turned over to Blaugies allowing them to build the expansion.

What a treat tasting these beers in a state of freshness we never get to experience here in the US. While I've never had two bottles of Blaugies taste the same anyway, they are even different all together before they make their long exportation journey.
